With Neil Patel’s Uber Suggest turning premium recently, demand for free keyword research tool has skyrocketed once again. Majority of the keyword research tools in the market, like Uber Suggest, are premium and extremely expensive. Tools like Ahref, SEM Rush, KW Finder and others can only be afforded by big digital marketing agencies i.e agencies with a large number of high ticket clientele.

As we all know that content is the core of SEO. But just plain and simple content is not enough to rank on the first page of Google Search Engine. Simple content makes it easy for the user to understand but not compatible with search engines’ bots. In order to make the content user as well as bot friendly, one needs to add important keywords to the content at the right locations and in the right quantity. This technique is called as keyword placement. Placing the right keywords in the content with the correct keyword density is what differentiates one SEO executive or a content writer from the other. This is the real skill.

Is there any genuinely free keyword research tool for SEO?

The answer is, Yes. There is a method through which one can perform keyword research absolutely free infinite number of times. I will teach you about a method which is known only to a handful of people in the industry. Even the most experienced professionals, who specialise only in SEO, might not be aware of this advance technique. This method is highly accurate, logical and most effective as it involves tools that are provided by Google and are absolutely free. But before I reveal it, you first need to understand a little bit about keywords and why it’s impact is so significant on the rankings of any content in the search engines.

A keyword also known as a key phrase is typically a phrase used by bloggers or online content creator to rank a web page on a particular topic.

What is Keyword Density?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or a key phrase appears in the content of a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. The ideal keyword density should be in the range of 1% to 3%. Excessive use of keywords in the content may lead to keyword stuffing which is considered as a black hat SEO technique.

What are the types of keywords –

There are two main types of keywords –

  • Short-tail keywords example – keyword research
  • Long-tail keywords example – how to do keyword research

Short-tail keywords are short in length, very broad and highly competitive. On the other hand, long-tail keywords are longer in length, very specific and have a medium or low competition. So it is very important for any content to have the right blend of short-tail and long-tail keywords.

Most of the major search engines follow the principal of Latent Semantic Indexing also known as LSI. LSI is a technique through which search engines’ bots look for similar words and synonyms and try to form a relation between them thus understanding the content in detail. But when I add words like 32 GB, battery and screen size to the conversation, it immediately gives you an idea that I an talking about the brand Apple and not the fruit. In a similar manner, bots also try to look for and link similar or related words to understand the content and these words are nothing but keywords. So now you know why keywords are an integral part pf any piece of content.

What are the various categories of Keywords?

A user’s search query can be categorised as –

  • Informational – searches performed to answer questions or learn something
  • Navigational – searches performed to locate a specific website
  • Transactional – searches performed to buy something

For obvious reasons, commercial intent keywords only apply to transactional search queries.

What Are Commercial Intent Keywords?

Keywords are categorised based on the user intent. For any business, commercial intent keywords are the most important ones. These type of search queries indicate that the user is willing to buy.

There are 2 main classes of Commercial Keywords –

Buy Now’ Keywords – These type of keywords usually consist of words like-

  • Discounts

These are the keywords used by people just before making a purchase.

Product Keywords – These search queries contain –

How to do Keyword Research? What are the various steps involved?

Keywords are never chosen randomly by good SEO specialists.There is a logical way for shortlisting the right keywords for your content. Every keyword research process involves the following steps:

  • Step 1: Get a list of relevant keywords
  • Step 2: Shortlist Based on Search Volume or Average Monthly Searches
  • Step 3: Keyword Difficulty or Competition Analysis
  • Step 4: Choosing Primary & Secondary Keywords

I am going to share with you the technique to perform keyword research for free. It mainly involves 3 things –

  • Google’s keyword Planner Tool
  • Search Operators
  • Google’s Search Engine

How to do Keyword Research for Free?

Step 1: Get a list of relevant keywords using Google’s Keyword Planner Tool

We all know that Google provides a powerful keyword analysis and research tool known as the ‘Keyword Planner tool’. This tool is widely used for Google Search Ads as well as SEO purpose. Every digital marketer uses this tool for content creation and promotion. It gives a list of related keywords along with their paid competition, average monthly searches and estimated bids.

To access this tool, one needs to visit ads.google.com, sign in using gmail id an password. Once the account is created, you will find ‘Tools and Setting‘ option at the top right side. Click ‘Keyword Planner Tool’ option.

Once this is done, enter your reference or starting keywords and hit search. On doing this, google will give you all the related words it has from various search queries performed on it’s search engine.

Now Google will suggest hundreds of keywords. Choose only those which are relevant for your business. Consider user intent while filtering these keywords. Out of the hundreds of suggestions, you should be left with approximately 15-20 relevant keywords. Do this in an excel sheet.

Step 2: Shortlist Keywords based on Search Volume or Average Monthly Searches

Now out of these 15-20 keywords, shortlist only the ones with a medium to high search volume. You would want to rank for those keywords which have a decent search volume and which are actually searched numerous times because this might lead to a higher organic traffic to your website or blog. You will be left with 7-10 keywords now which are highly relevant and which have good average monthly searches. Your excel sheet at this stage should look somewhat like this –

Step 3: Check Keyword Difficulty or Competition Analysis using Search Operators

The last and the final step is to check the competition of these 7-10 keywords. You don’t want to target a keyword for your content which has a high difficulty level. It will only make your task more tedious, longer and unreliable. Rather choose the keywords with low or medium competition as this will make the whole process of achieving a higher ranking in search engines more easy and quicker.

There are premium tools like Ahref, SEM Rush, KW Finder & Uber Suggest but every tool gives you different answers. For instance a keyword’s competition as per Ahref might be low but the competition of the same keyword can be shown as high by SEM Rush. So all these tools are highly inefficient and unreliable when it comes to keywords’ competition analysis. But there is a free and a logical method to do it.

Many prefer using the competition column of the keyword planner tool which mentions how difficult it is to rank for a particular keyword and it is denoted as high, medium and low (see image below). I have seen many SEO specialists with 7-8 years of agency experience refer to this column for ‘SEO difficulty‘. Even the experienced digital marketing mentors suggest using the same column to understand the SEO difficulty level of keywords. This is a complete hoax. The competition column of the keyword planner tool suggests the ‘paid competition’ i.e. the competition from the real-time-bidding process or the ad auction. This has nothing to do with SEO or a keyword’s SEO difficulty. Sorry to burst the bubble for you but practically, the paid and seo difficulty of a keyword may not match. This is where search operators come into picture.

Search operators are some syntax or commands which give specific instructions to Google thus making Google Search more efficient and Accurate. There are numerous search operators which one can use to work around Google Search Engine smartly but in this article, I am going to discuss only the ones which are necessary.

The search operators that we are going to discuss are allintitle: (all-in-title-colon) and allinurl:(all-in-url-colon).

When you use allintitle: followed by the keyword in Google search engine, it sends an instruction to Google to show only those results whose meta title contains ALL the words in the key phrase which in this case is keyword research tool.

On the other hand, allinurl: followed by the keyword in Google search engine, it sends an instruction to Google to show only those results whose URL contains ALL the words in the key phrase which in this case is keyword research tool.

The allintitle: and allinurl: values indicate the competition level of that keyword. It helps us understand how difficult or easy it is going to be to rank on the 1st page on Google for that particular keyword. Higher allintitle: and allinurl: indicate that a lot of websites have these as their primary keywords hence listing it in the meta title and url of the content. That means you have to compete with a lot of website to rank on the 1st page of Google.

Now you need to add two more columns to your excel sheet and name them as allintitle: and allinurl:. The excel sheet should appear like this-

First find out the allintitle: values of all your keywords as shown in the image below. Note there is NO Space after the colon and before the start of the keyword.

On the Google search results page, you will find the result value above the 1st listing. Note this value in the excel sheet below the allintitle: column.

Now find out the allinurl: values of all your keywords as shown in the image below. Note there is NO Space after the colon and before the start of the keyword.

Do this for all the shortlisted 7-10 keywords. The final table should look like this.

Step 4: Choosing Primary & Secondary Keywords

As I mentioned earlier, one does not choose keywords randomly. There is a logical process involved. Now in an ideal world, one should choose the keyword which has the highest search volume and lowest competition as his main or primary keyword. But that doesn’t always happen. Look at the table above. the keyword ‘keyword research’ has the maximum amount of average monthly searches i.e. 5400. But look at the competition for that keyword (allintitle: and allinurl: values). the allintitle: value is 182000 and the allinurl: value is 384000. This indicated that I have to compete against 182000 or 384000 listings to achieve a higher ranking preferable to rank on the 1st page of Google. That is quite a steep task. Ignore such keywords.

Look the the keyword with 2nd highest number of average monthly searches. The keyword ‘keyword research tools free’ has an average monthly search volume of 4400 and it’s allintitle: and allinurl: values are 3160 & 1690 respectively. This indicated that I have to compete against roughly 3160 or 1690 listings to achieve to rank on the 1st page of Google. This keyword is the right keyword for us and should be chosen as the primary keyword. Other phrases like ‘keyword research free tools, keyword research on google & keyword research tool’ for seo which have a relatively lower competition can be chosen as the secondary keywords.

When you do SEO that doesn’t mean your competitors are not doing it. That also doesn’t mean that the businesses who are already ranking on the 1st page have stopped their SEO activities. If you choose to have a keyword with high average monthly search volume & high competition as your primary keyword, you will realise after 6-10 months that you do not have a decent rank in Google search results. And in the process you ignored the less competitive keywords just because they did not have a high search volume. So basically after 6-10 months of SEO efforts you are no where to be found on Google. This is the difference between good SEO executives and great SEO specialists.

By following this technique, your content will start ranking on the 1st page very quickly as this is the most logical way of doing keyword research. Make sure you practice this as this secret technique is not known to many people, even the experienced SEO professionals.
